The DFA Moisture Meter

The DFA Moisture Meter

Our meter, designed with ease of operation in mind, can be adjusted and calibrated to secure an accurate measurement of moisture content for a wide variety of commodities. It is hand-built in the United States, and sold and distributed both domestically and internationally to South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Our Method

Our moisture determination method, which uses conductivity to test for moisture using a Wheatstone bridge, is faster than vacuum oven methods and is published in the Journal of the Association of Official Analytical Chemist (AOAC).  It is the only non-oven method that is approved by the AOAC for use with dried fruit, making it widely used by the dried fruit industry both in the U.S. and internationally.

DFA’s moisture meter is the only device approved by the AOAC for use with our method. The meter has four patent classifications: U.S., International, Cooperative, and European.

Technical Specifications

  • Uses 110-volt A/C current — for other voltages a step down transformer (available from any electronics store) should be used
  • Accurate to ±1%
  • Can be calibrated to many different commodities (calibration handled via included taps)
  • Meter dimensions: 6″ x 7″ x 5.5″ (~ 15.2cm x 17.8cm x 13.9cm)
  • Clamp unit dimensions: 4″ x 7″ x 10″  (~ 10.1cm x 17.8cm x 25.4cm)
  • Ships in 1 cubic foot (0.028 cubic meters) carton
  • Total weight of approximately 10lb (4.53kg)

Commodities

The included calibration chart provides instructions for the following commodities:

  • Apples
  • Apricots
  • Dates
  • Figs
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Prunes
  • Raisins

The Kit

A full moisture meter kit costs a flat rate of $1595 for domestic purchases and $1725 for international purchases (prices include shipping fees and taxes). The kit includes:

  • 1 Moisture Meter
  • 1 Clamp unit
  • 1 Chart
  • 1 Patch Cord
  • 1 Thermometer
  • 2 Commodity Cylinders
  • 1 Long Probe
  • 1 Short Probe
  • 3 Tap Plugs

If you would like to order individual pieces, please use our parts order form. To order a complete kit, use the full kit order form.

A grinder, not included with the kit, is needed to grind the fruit. Most home or laboratory food grinders are suitable, provided the holes in the plate are between 1/8″ and 3/16″ in diameter.

Maintenance Program

Safe Food Alliance offers an official maintenance program for the DFA Moisture Meter.

Request an Invoice

To request an invoice, use either of the forms below and a representative will get back to you as soon as possible with available payment methods. Please be aware that while the moisture meter full kitpricing includes shipping costs, the parts pricing does not.
